Words with Weight - Youth Changemakers' Feature

"We are not merely a magazine - we are a movement."

Excerpt from Words with Weight Literary Magazine's Mission Statement

Words With Weight is a youth-driven literary magazine that merges literature with politicial expression, offering a platform for young writers to share their perspectives on social justice topics through creative writing. Founded by Anniyah Rizvi in May 2023, the magazine aims to provide a voice for teens interested in combining activism and art. Words with Weight is pioneering a shift in the youth literary community by creating a space for controversial, often suppressed subjects. It is also a paid affiliate of the small business "Prose to Print."

Words With Weight has focused on amplifying young voices in poetry, prose, and essays that challenge readers to think critically about current events and social justice topics. The magazine has grown exponentially since they have built a passionate team of 140 global editors, engaging young writers nationwide. Literature and transformation often go hand in hand, but voices die in silence - which is why their team has published dozens of pieces via print anthologies that donate to relief funds, such as a fund in Gaza.

I had the opportunity to interview Anniyah about her journey of creating Words With Weight, the challenges of launching a new publication, and her vision for the magazine's exciting future.

What inspired you to start Words With Weight?

"I started Words With Weight because the literary magazine at my school was defunct, but I had always wanted to be on the staff of a publication," Anniyah said. "I loved the idea of combining politics and literature, two of my greatest interests, into one magazine."

Anniyah initially launched the magazine as a creative outlet but soon discovered that there was a strong demand for a platform where teens could share their thoughts on social justice issues through literature. In a turbulent world where censorship is becoming prevalent, there was an urgency among young people to effect whatever change they could in their social circles. By founding Words With Weight, Anniyah found a way to pursue her interests while inspiring others to use their writing as a tool for awareness.

What challenges have you faced in building your magazine, and how have you overcome them?

"I think the biggest challenge any new publication faces is outreach," Anniyah said. "It’s difficult to garner submissions or gain staff members when no one knows about you."

Anniyah credits the supportive literary community on Instagram with helping Words With Weight grow. "The lit mag community is incredibly friendly and welcoming. Frequently posting on social media, collaborating with other magazines, and getting featured on literary websites really helped get our name out there," Anniyah explained.

They advised other young creators to remain patient and to connect with like-minded organizations to help expand their reach. "It can be frustrating, but you just have to give it some time!"

What are Words With Weight’s current projects and goals for the future?

"We are thrilled to be collaborating with Writopia Lab to host a workshop that brings together teens from across the political spectrum to write together," Anniyah said. "This workshop will take place right before the November election, so it’s a timely and exciting way for us to connect with writers who might have different perspectives."

Writopia Lab partnerships and Chill Subs features are just the beginning of Anniyah's future goals. She has thought of broadening the scope of Words With Weight into a connected platform. "Eventually, I do see us either removing our age limit altogether or establishing a separate youth branch of our magazine. Either way, I hope to keep releasing issues for a long time!"

What advice would you give to other young innovators looking to start their own initiatives?

"My most important advice is to just start," Anniyah said. "There will always be areas for growth, and that’s okay. The sooner you begin, the sooner you’ll see results."

Anniyah recommended that new writers and editors experiment with their niche and not shy away from publishing through a medium that is not as mainstream. "There are countless youth-led initiatives. What makes yours unique? If you want to make a significant impact, it shouldn’t just be a ‘passion project’ for your resume. Are you serious about exploring its potential long-term? Those are the questions you have to answer."
