Equality Through Education: Youth Changemakers' Feature #5

Equality Through Education (ETE) is a youth-led 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization focusing on resource expansion and education reform. As per their mission statement, ETE seeks to “break barriers and bridge divides” through its admirable advocacy efforts on an international scale. ETE has twenty chapters across countries such as the United States, Pakistan, Canada, and India. ETE is a truly diverse coalition with an ever-expanding international team.

Through connection, communication, and effective leadership, in one year they have collaborated with rural schools in India to share over 250 online resources, empowering underprivileged communities by utilizing novel technologies such as improved internet access.

The nonprofit has also received grants from reputable sources such as the Hershey Company and the Governor of Maryland. With this funding, ETE successfully led initiatives targeting students on local and global scales such as SMART Classrooms and the Menstrual Equity Education Coalition.

For my interview, I spoke with Oorja Munot, founder and president of (ETE). She is a rising junior in the IB program at Richard Montgomery High School, Maryland. Let’s get into learning more about her incredible story!

What was your inspiration for starting your organization?

"When I first thought of ETE as a 9th grader, it wasn’t just a project; it was a heartfelt response to an urgent need I witnessed growing up in three different countries: India, Belgium and the USA. These diverse experiences in various corners of the world exposed me to the stark disparities in education," Oorja said.

"I couldn't help but question why some individuals had a smoother path to success, while others faced immense obstacles simply due to their backgrounds and circumstances. Student potential was often limited by a system that favors privilege over merit. This led to the start of ETE with its bold mission of working towards closing the education divide by providing students with the proper resources and assistance they need to be successful in pursuing a comprehensive education."

Oorja continued by recounting a pivotal personal experience.

"During my trip to India this summer, I truly witnessed the first hand impact of ETE’s work. Meeting with students and teachers made it clear that our efforts were making a genuine difference in their lives. As I witnessed their smiles and eagerness to learn, I felt immense pride in ETE.

We made extensive lists of resources the students requested, and discussed building a smart classroom, fully equipped with an Ipad, projector and an internet connection. This may seem basic to many, but doing this would change their lives, allowing them to dedicate more time towards their education rather than worrying about resources."

What major issues or complications have you faced, and how did your team overcome them?

Coordinating meetings despite varying time zones was challenging, especially with an international team.

"While it has been challenging to get everyone on a schedule, we have managed to establish regular meetings. Additionally, tailoring our programs to support the unique needs of different communities required continuous learning and adaptation, which we achieved through close communication with local leaders, ETE ambassadors and stakeholders," Oorja recounted.

What goals does your organization have for future projects, and where do you see yourselves expanding over the following years?

"ETE’s vision for the future is ambitious and far-reaching. We aim to not only expand our presence internationally but also to enhance and diversify our existing programs to address the unique needs of each community we serve," Oorja said.

"Our goals include establishing more chapters across different states and countries, focusing on regions with significant educational disparities. This expansion involves forming strategic partnerships with local organizations and schools to ensure our programs are effectively implemented and impactful.

In addition to global expansion, we plan to develop and launch new initiatives that address specific educational needs. Finally, we aim to foster a global network of volunteers, educators, and supporters who are committed to our mission. By creating a platform with ideas and resources, we hope to amplify our collective impact. Over the next few years, we see ETE growing into a leading organization in the field of educational equity, known for its innovative solutions and transformative impact on underprivileged students worldwide.

I have come to recognize that my true accomplishment lies in the radiant smiles of students I witnessed that day. The happiness in their eyes when they have a new book to read, a new pencil to write with, a new day where they are able to learn without anything holding them back. This image has been my source of inspiration and helped ETE in their continued commitment to making change manifested in initiatives like ETE's SMART Classrooms, which has been featured in multiple local Marathi newspapers."

What advice would you give to aspiring young innovators and youth who want to make a difference in their community or on a global scale?

In conclusion, Oorja would like to offer some advice for future innovators who want to make a difference in their community or start a nonprofit of their own.

"My advice is to start with a clear vision and a strong passion for the change they want to see. Don’t be afraid to take the first step, even if it seems small. Collaboration is key—build a network of like-minded individuals and organizations that share your goals," Oorja said.

"Stay resilient in the face of challenges, and be open to learning and adapting along the way. Most importantly, believe in your ability to make a difference and stay committed to your mission. Your efforts, no matter how small they may seem, can create a ripple effect of positive change in your community and beyond."
